Meet Danijella Lehman, a Lead Designer of Aplomb Studio,  a creative studio that builds brand identities for small, medium and large-scale businesses run by women. The word aplomb means to have self-confidence and assurance. Aplomb Studio prides itself on confidently using our knowledge to help passionate women find their own. It focuses on working with like-minded women in business to help them achieve success and find their dream clients, through powerful, intentional, and confident designs. She does it through careful strategy and planning, using her logical mind to create something unique and purposeful.

Let’s get to know more about her and her business in the Q+A.

Tell us a little about yourself and your business?

I am a graphic designer and I run Aplomb Studio; a design studio that helps like-minded women in business find success through powerful, intentional and confident designs. The word ‘aplomb’ means to have self-confidence and assurance – Aplomb Studio helps women find confidence in their business and stand out from the crowd.

What inspired you to make the leap and go out on your own, and when did you first start working for yourself?

Since my days in high-school, I knew that I wanted to have my own design business. I took the leap straight after finishing my diploma at university, starting with family friends, to eventually freelancing at marketing agencies and with clients from around the country.

Tell us about your experience of working for yourself?

It hasn’t been easy, but I have never lost my passion. I have been lucky enough to find either full-time or part-time roles in graphic design to keep my head up while working on my own business. I feel blessed to be able to do what I love both full-time and in my own time. I’ve been able to work for larger companies at agencies I’ve freelanced at, and I’ve been able to help start-ups build their brand through Aplomb Studio.

What’s your best piece of advice for someone wanting to make the leap?

Plan ahead! I think having a clear idea of what you want before you take the leap will save you a tremendous amount of time. You won’t need to do as much guessing, and you will be able to spend more time in your business as opposed to on your business. Set up your branding, website, paperwork, and everything else before you start selling/providing services.

Best tips for winning new business?

Social media has been amazing for me. Utilise the platform that resonates most with your target audience. I find Instagram to be my best source, and often focus on gaining web traffic through here rather than organic searches on google.

What has been your favourite project to date?

My favourite project to date has definitely been DIY Drip, an affordable jewellery brand in Sydney. It feels great to see the packaging I designed for her to be so well-received not only by her, but also her customers!

What is a business win you’re currently celebrating?

I have recently upgraded my work equipment, which has made my work process so much more efficient and fun! Being able to afford more advanced pieces of technology is something I am super grateful for.

What led you to join Freelancing Gems?

I actually discovered Freelancing Gems during my studies at Billy Blue College of Design. It seemed like a great idea, and evidently so! I immediately joined and since then I have been part of the community and loving every minute, there are so many great resources that have helped.

What is one word you would use to describe Freelancing Gems?

Empowering

What’s next for your business?

I would love to work with more brands in the fashion and cosmetic realm, I have so many ideas in my brain that I would love to get out into the world through design!
