Freelancer profile: Meet Jade, a Digital Illustrator

Meet Jade, a Digital Illustrator who brings ideas to life! She is also a loving mother caring for her eldest daughter who needs tender care due to health issues. Jade spends a lot of time in hospital and creating illustrations helps distract herself and destress her. Let’s get to know Jade & her inspiring story.

What inspired you to make the leap and go out on your own, and when did you first start working for yourself?

For as long as I can remember I have found comfort in illustrating and creating. My eldest daughter has a health issue, and as a consequence, we spent many days and nights at the hospital. To pass the time I found myself hand-illustrating creative stories that she could colour-in to distract her. In 2019, I was approached by Kinfolk Panty to create illustrated anatomy cards, which turned my humble hobby into a sustainable and profitable business – Timber Kids. Throughout my creative and business management journey, I have learned to rock many hats; designer, problem-solver, account manager, town drunk, social media manager, video editor, administrator and so many more. I’m resilient. I’m innovative and I’m here to make sure my mark (or drawing) represents something great.

Tell us about your experience of working for yourself?

It has been very up and down; I have learnt SO many lessons but I have never been happier or prouder of myself.

What’s your best piece of advice for someone wanting to make the leap?

Trust yourself and back yourself 100%, if it doesn’t feel right don’t do it.

What has been your favourite project to date?

I am currently working on a passion project, illustrating a book to bring awareness to twin infant loss.
