She prides herself on her professionalism, diligence and discretion, coupled with her desire to deliver a client experience that goes beyond what is expected.

Let’s get to know Kate more in our interview with her.

1.  Tell us a little about yourself and your business?

My name is Kate and I am a mother, partner and business owner. I have 20 years of Administration and Legal Assistance experience behind me and I am ready to change my career to find a new career path. I embarked on working for myself and creating a business that would give me the flexibility to be more present as a mother and a daughter. I decided to start a Virtual Assistance business where I could work, still provide, but also have the flexibility instead of the 9 – 5  grind.

2. What inspired you to make the leap and go out on your own, and when did you first start working for yourself?

My family unit is my inspiration. I was working the 9 – 5 grind and slowly realised how much I was not present for my family and I was missing out on too many life events.

My child was growing up before my eyes (she is now 7) and I realised how much I have missed of her life after giving birth to her, she was in full time day-care from 12 weeks. I wanted to make a change for my family unit including my older parents. I wanted to be able to be there for my parents as well as we all know when they start getting older, their health is not the best. The past 12 months I have watched my dad go in and out of hospital and the strain it was taking on my elderly mother. I thought right, it’s time to me to be more present, what if something happened? What if they needed me?

3. Tell us about your experience of working for yourself?

I registered my business in January 2022 and I finally resigned from my full time job in June 2022. Whilst I was working full-time as a Legal Practice Manager, I was working at night to try and build my business. I have had the opportunity to work for different types of businesses including legal firms, barristers, tradies, events and hospitality businesses. This has opened my mind to the type of businesses that bring me joy and I have learnt a lot in the short time I have been in business for myself.

4. What’s your best piece of advice for someone wanting to make the leap?

Stop procrastinating and do it, imagine what you life would be like in 6 months from now if you just did what you are passionate about.

5. Best tips for winning new business?

Always be professional and kind but also be yourself. You don’t have to take every opportunity that comes your way, be kind to yourself and understand the reason why you want to be in the business you are in.

6. What has been your favourite project to date?

I had the opportunity assisting a Mental Health worker with her administration. This opportunity was one wherein I gained experience in a whole different line of work and being an empathetic person, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to assist where someone was struggling mentally with their workload and making an impact on her mental health was life changing.

7. What is a business win you’re currently celebrating?

Considering I am only new, one win that has made me smile is getting leads from people that I align with and enjoying the aspect of assisting where needed.

8. What led you to join Freelancing Gems?

The community of like-minded woman who loved to hustle but also enjoyed life at the same time!

9. What is one word you would use to describe Freelancing Gems?

Inspiring

10. What’s next for your business?

I want to be able to grow my business to work with like-minded business owners who are overworked and being able to provide assistance to give them a better work-life balance.
