Let’s get to know more about Nicole in our interview.

Tell us a little about yourself and your business?

I’m mum to my 5-year-old son Andrew and wife to my husband Nick.  We live on Brisbane’s bayside and love getting outdoors exploring our great country in our 4WD and caravan.

I started my business Niche Enterprise Marketing in November 2021 after over 18 years in the public and private sector both here in Australia and the UK.  My niche is supporting small businesses with their social media strategies including helping them create engaging content, scheduling and publishing.  I’m passionate about creating brand awareness for my clients through social media and using this exciting digital channel to help them achieve their business goals.

What inspired you to make the leap and go out on your own, and when did you first start working for yourself?

I was working for a large multi-national property developer for nearly 8 years when I was made redundant in September 2021.  Following this redundancy, I knew this was an opportunity to do something for myself and not ‘work for the man’ for the rest of my working career.  I was tired of the corporate world and was looking for a better work/life balance and to be more available to my family.  The idea of freelancing / contracting was suggested by a former colleague who took the leap into this world and so the rest is history!  Niche Enterprise Marketing (my initials NEM!) was established in October 2021.

Tell us about your experience of working for yourself?

It’s been a steep learning curve working out business processes, learning good business acumen and finding that work/life balance, but after nearly 10 months in business, I’ve finally found it.  There’s been some quiet work weeks and some busy work weeks, but I’m where I want to be in my business and happy with the balance.

What’s your best piece of advice for someone wanting to make the leap?

Just go for it and back yourself.  Have the courage to make the change and just don’t look back.  Plan out what you want to achieve and set realistic goals along the way.

Best tips for winning new business?

Trust your pitch and believe in yourself.  Use your network far and wide to find work and just build relationships.

What has been your favourite project to date?

Working with another Gem I met through FG to manage social media pages for clients across a range of industries.  She’s been an incredible person to learn so many things from.

What is a business win you’re currently celebrating?

I recently landed two new clients through FG and my wider network.

What led you to join Freelancing Gems?

I’ve been following Fleur since her days owning Red Republic so I was keen in Freelancing Gems when she announced it was going to launch.  The opportunity to use this supportive platform when starting my business was incredible with so many business tools on offer.

What is one word you would use to describe Freelancing Gems?

Empowering.

What’s next for your business?

What’s next?  At this point, I’m happy with where I’m at but am very keen to get better at the business acumen side of things.  Anyone on here a good bookkeeper that can teach me things?  Lol!
