Meet Annette, a copywriter and owner of Absolute Communications from Melbourne.  She is dedicated to delivering engaging and relevant copy for her clients.

Let’s get to know more about her story in our Q&A.

Tell us a little about yourself and your business.

I’m a copywriter and owner of Absolute Marketing Communications. I live in Melbourne with my husband and two sons.

Prior to starting my own business, I worked in marketing and public relations. When I started my business, I offered marketing and PR services as well as copywriting but as it evolved, I found myself taking on more copywriting jobs and found this is where my passion lies.

What inspired you to make the leap and go out on your own?

Prior to having children, I worked in a marketing and PR role with a music and home entertainment brand. While I loved it, there was a lot of travel involved and I knew that once I had a family, I’d no longer want to do that level of travel or work full-time.

After having my first child, I discussed with my employer the option of going back to work part-time. While they were open to it, there were a lot of conditions attached and it didn’t feel like the right move for me. I saw this as the perfect opportunity to consider other options. I did a bit of freelance work and in 2013 when I was pregnant with my second child, I decided to start my business.

Tell us about your experience of working for yourself.

Like with anything, there are ups and downs, but I love it. I’m constantly learning new things to help me improve my business. I love and appreciate that I have the flexibility to work around my family so I can be at school events, do school drop-offs, and pick-ups, take time off to get away with the family, etc.

What’s your best piece of advice for someone wanting to take the leap?

Take the plunge. Believe in yourself and what you’re capable of and things will start to fall into place.

Best tips for winning new business?

Tell everyone you know about what you do, you never know who may need your services. When you’re pitching be confident and believe in what you’re selling.

What has been your favourite project to date?

I worked with a client that was offering their business as a franchise, so I worked on their franchise prospectus, website and blog. There were so many facets to this project, and it was so different from my regular work, that every day I’d be excited to get to work on it. I especially enjoyed working on their franchise prospectus as I had never done one of these before. It was one of those projects where I could just sit and write, which I loved!

What is a business win you’re currently celebrating?

I’ve started working with a client in the building and interior design space which I’m really loving.

What’s next for your business?

While growing my business is my main focus, I’d also like to learn some new skills that I can incorporate into my copywriting so I can offer a wider range of services.
