Meet Mehtap, a HR & Business Strategy Consultant who prides herself on connecting small business owners with big business people and culture thinking. We recently spoke to Mehtap on all things freelancing.

When and why did you ditch the 9-5 and go out on your own?

3 years ago after taking a redundancy. I initially saw it as a break from full-time work to figure out my next move, but it ended up being the best decision I could’ve ever made.

What’s the best piece of advice you’d give to someone who is waiting to take the leap to work for themselves?

Go for it! In hindsight, all the signs were there that I should do it. I had spent years building up my personal brand, I had networks who trusted my work and my advice. I’m very grateful for my supportive network.

Best tips for winning new business?

I’ve been fortunate enough to win all my work through referrals, so make sure you reach out to your own network. I work in HR & Business Consultancy. Business owners want someone who has a balanced view of business & people, and someone they can trust with their team. A referral from an existing client or someone in your network goes a long way to establishing that trust.

What has been your favourite client/project you’ve done to date?

That’s like trying to choose your favourite song or movie – too hard! My favourite moment with a client is the light bulb moment when it all starts to click, the hard work starts producing results. Seeing my clients get excited to tackle the next project is so exciting. I’ve had so many clients in tears over people challenges, to see that pressure lift and watch these amazing entrepreneurs get their mojo back is so rewarding.

What is a business win you’re currently celebrating?

My client starting to publicly accept her title of CEO was a nice moment this week. The transition from self-contributor to leader can be challenging, its brilliant to watch people grow to accept their value and contribution as leaders.
